Ethan gave himself a few seconds to study the bogged-down sports car. He’d taken a great risk in what he’d had Mel do. The car’s engine might have been powerful enough to get it through the slight ditch and the hedge, especially after the heavier van plowed a path. But maybe the van had disturbed the earth enough to make the car’s passage more difficult. Either way, Ethan doubted it would stay stuck for long.

“Let’s get going,” Ethan said. He kept his tone modulated, not wanting to upset Sheila or startle Mel.

She was an excellent driver—but that didn’t surprise him. Everything about her impressed him.

He returned his attention to where it should be—ensuring they got away while they could.

“Be prepared for trouble,” he told Mel.

“I know.” She kept her gaze ahead. “We’ll be within firing range.” It was risky to drive close to the sports car—but it was riskier to continue driving off-road. All it would take would be a root or hole in the wrong place, and the van would get stuck. They were safer back on the road.

“Lie on the seat,” Ethan told his sister. “You’ll be safer below window level.”

With a little whimper, Sheila flattened herself along the back seat.

Jaw tight in the dashboard lights, Mel leaned over the steering wheel and hit the gas. The van shot forward, swaying and bouncing through the field. Even with his seat belt on, Ethan had to grip his door armrest to keep from flopping to the side or forward against the glove box. His teeth rattled and snapped together, nearly catching his tongue.

Then they reached a parallel position with the sports car. Two men stood beside it, looking down at the frame bottomed out on the ground. One glanced up at their passing and grabbed for his weapon. A flash, a bang, the ping of a bullet hitting the cargo bay.

Sheila gasped.

“We’re okay,” Ethan said, though he wondered where the gas tank was located. “We’ll be okay.”

“Speed up,” Sheila commanded.

“I’m trying.” Mel spoke through clenched teeth. Concentration. Stress.

Ethan feared she couldn’t keep up this pace for much longer. She needed to go home, needed to rest.

Except she couldn’t go home now. Derek’s men knew who she was—and they would know where to look for her. He had dragged her into this mess, and she was stuck until they figured out how to end it.

Ethan knew how to stop Derek and his henchmen. It was dangerous. It was risky. It might not even work, and they could all end up dead, with his nephews in the hands of their felonious father.

But he had to try.

At last, the blacktop hummed beneath their front tires. The back ones spun on the edge of the drainage channel. From no more than fifty feet away, one of the men fired again.

“Ease off,” Ethan directed. “Back up just a little...”

Despite the shots pinging off the cargo hold, Mel followed his directions. The shooter was aiming for the tires. He wasn’t a good shot, apparently, since his aim was too high.
